Telemedicine

We are pleased to be able to offer telemedicine (video) visits.

Procedure for scheduling a telemedicine exam:

  1. Call the office at 904-398-2720.
  2. We will set up a time for your visit and send you a message either by e-mail or text with further instructions
    • Camera and microphone will be required.  We prefer that you use your smartphone, iphone, android phone to initiate the visit as we may ask you to move the camera close to your eyes. You will not need to download anything.
  3.  Medical technician will call you to gather all necessary information prior to meeting with the doctor
  4. Please try to be ready a few minutes before your appointment time.  If your doctor is not on-line at your scheduled time, please wait and they will join you shortly
  5. Because these are considered medical visits with a doctor, your insurance will be billed for the service.  

Some important information to keep in mind:

  1. The video technology will not be the same as an in-person examination, and there are limitations to the care we are able to provide.  For example, we cannot check glasses or contact lens prescriptions
  2. Your visit may not be with your usual doctor
  3. Telemedicine is not an emergency service, and in the event of an emergency, you should call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room
  4. This service is available to both new and existing patients

Symptoms and findings that may be addressed by telemedicine include but are not limited to:

  1. Dry or irritated eyes
  2. Red eyes
  3. Ocular discomfort
  4. Blurred vision (although we will not be able to check prescriptions for glasses or contacts)
  5. Issues related to the use of a current prescription for eye drops
  6. Consultations for lesions, styes, and growths
  7. Post-operative consultations

What are telemedicine and telehealth?

Telemedicine is the use of electronic communications to provide real-time health care to patients at a distance. Physicians are able to treatment, consult and monitor patients virtually.  Physicians can communicate using digital video cameras, internet telecommunications, mobile devices and other technologies.

What is needed to be able to do a virtual exam?

No need to download software or create an account. Patients will need a browser on computer, tablet or mobile device with a camera and microphone. Once your appointment has been confirmed a technician will call you to start your virtual exam.

Why telemedicine? What are the benefits of Virtual Exams

  • By visiting your doctor virtually you can minimize your risk of exposure to COVID-19.
  • Receive medical advice from your doctor from your home.
  • Direct access to physician with no waiting room times.

Does insurance pay for my virtual eye exam?

Virtual exams are covered under most medical insurance. A member of our billing department will confirm with your specific insurance plan and will notify you if your insurance does not provide coverage prior to your visit.

*Vision insurance for routine eye exams are not currently cover telemedicine.
